Two Suspected Robbers Fatally Shot in Confrontation with Police Following Foiled Highway Incident

Two suspected armed robbers were killed in a confrontation with Ghana Police Service personnel in Buipe, Savannah Region, on April 29, 2026, following a foiled robbery attempt and an earlier attack on a police patrol team along the Yapei–Tamale Highway. Two other suspects are in custody, assisting with investigations into the criminal activities.

Context of the Incident

The events unfolded after a series of intelligence-led operations by the police in the Savannah Region, an area that has seen persistent security challenges related to armed robbery. The Yapei–Tamale Highway is a critical economic route, and reported incidents of robbery have caused significant concern among residents and commuters.

Foiled Robbery and Patrol Ambush

On April 26, 2026, a police patrol team encountered three armed individuals on the Yapei–Tamale road. The suspects opened fire on an armored police vehicle, prompting the patrol team to return fire. The assailants fled into the bush, leaving behind a locally manufactured firearm and an empty cartridge.

Following this incident, the police launched a subsequent operation based on intelligence gathered. This led to the arrest of two suspects, Osman Abdulai, also known as ‘Landan’, and Umar Seidu, in Tamale on April 27, 2026. They are currently being held at the Damongo Divisional Police station.

Confessions and Further Arrests

During interrogation, Abdulai and Seidu reportedly confessed their intention to carry out a robbery at Yapei, an operation they had to abandon due to a motor accident. They also admitted to their involvement in the earlier attack on the police patrol team and named three accomplices: Babuga, Kilor, and Malami.

The suspects led police to a location along the Yapei–Salaga road, where a single-barrel shotgun with a shortened barrel and five rounds of ammunition were recovered. This discovery further corroborated their involvement in armed criminal activities.

Deadly Confrontation in Buipe

Acting on information provided by suspect Osman Abdulai, police conducted a follow-up operation in Buipe on April 29, 2026, to apprehend the remaining gang members. The operation led officers to a guest house where two suspects, identified as Babuga and an accomplice, were located.

According to police reports, one of the suspects, identified as Babuga, attacked the police officers with a machete. In the ensuing confrontation, both suspects sustained gunshot injuries. They were transported to the Buipe District Hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital mortuary in Damongo, awaiting preservation and autopsy. The two arrested suspects, Osman Abdulai and Umar Seidu, are expected to be arraigned before court soon.

Community Reaction and Ongoing Efforts

The Deputy Savannah Regional Police Commander, ACP Reynolds Manteaw, briefed journalists on the developments, commending the police for their swift action. The assembly member for the Yapei Electoral Area, Kamilu Iddi, lauded the police, describing the day as groundbreaking. He highlighted the persistent harassment faced by residents and market women from such criminal elements, expressing relief that the police have made progress in dismantling the gang.

The police stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects, Kilor and Malami, and to dismantle the broader robbery network operating in the region. The successful operation marks a significant step in enhancing security along the vital Yapei–Tamale Highway.

Implications for Regional Security

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating armed robbery in the Savannah Region. The police’s proactive intelligence gathering and decisive action in this case demonstrate a commitment to restoring safety and order. The successful apprehension and neutralization of suspects involved in highway attacks are crucial for maintaining economic activity and public confidence. The focus now shifts to the swift prosecution of the arrested individuals and the continued pursuit of those at large, signaling a heightened police presence and a zero-tolerance approach to armed criminal enterprises in the area. The effectiveness of these operations will be closely watched as an indicator of future security trends on the region’s major transport routes.
