The Rotary Club of Accra-Odadee AOGA marked its second anniversary and Mother’s Day this past weekend by launching a significant healthcare support initiative. The project delivered much-needed aid to mothers, newborns, and healthcare facilities in both Accra and Dodowa, Ghana.
Community Health Focus
The initiative specifically targeted maternal and newborn healthcare at the Shai-Osudoku District Hospital in Dodowa and the Achimota Hospital. Beyond direct patient support, the project aimed to alleviate financial burdens for vulnerable mothers struggling with post-delivery medical costs.
In a demonstration of commitment to patient mobility, the Club, in partnership with the Wheelchair Foundation and Chair The Hope, donated several wheelchairs. These donations are expected to improve patient movement within the hospital grounds.
New mothers at both facilities received essential newborn care packages. These packages contained vital items to assist mothers and their babies in the crucial post-delivery period.
Addressing Financial Barriers in Healthcare
One of the most impactful aspects of the initiative involved the settlement of outstanding medical bills for several mothers. These women had delivered their babies but were unable to afford their healthcare expenses, with some facing delayed discharge from the hospitals due to these unpaid bills.
Mother Teresa Brew, President of the Rotary Club of Accra-Odadee AOGA, highlighted the strategic alignment of the project with Rotary International’s core focus on maternal and child health. She stated that the timing with Mother’s Day was intentional, serving as an honour to the resilience and sacrifices of mothers.
Brew emphasized the ongoing need for service organizations to supplement government efforts in tackling pressing healthcare challenges, particularly for disadvantaged populations. She noted that such collaborations are crucial for strengthening the healthcare system.
Hospital and Beneficiary Reactions
Officials from both the Shai-Osudoku District Hospital and Achimota Hospital expressed profound gratitude for the timely support. They described the donations as a significant boost for both patients and the healthcare infrastructure.
Several mothers who benefited from the program shared their emotional responses, thanking the Club for the intervention. They described the support as a substantial relief during a challenging time in their lives.
Extended Reach and Individual Impact
The Club’s commitment extended beyond the immediate Accra and Dodowa areas. Support also reached the Oti Region, where a donated wheelchair was presented to a single mother in Worawora. This woman has reportedly faced mobility challenges since childhood.
Despite her personal circumstances, the beneficiary works as a groundnut farmer to support herself and her son. Club members cited her story as a powerful example of the importance of providing support with dignity and compassion to vulnerable individuals.
