Four individuals were rescued by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) following two separate road traffic accidents on the Ho–Asikuma highway in the Volta Region on Sunday, May 24, 2026. The incidents, occurring within a three-hour span, led to significant disruptions and underscored ongoing road safety concerns.
The first accident took place around 7:18 a.m. near the Customs Barrier at Asikuma. A Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck, traveling from Accra towards Peki, was involved in a collision that severely damaged its engine compartment and rear, trapping one occupant.
Firefighters from the Peki Fire Station responded swiftly to both emergencies. Upon arriving at the first scene, they found the pickup truck mangled and immediately commenced rescue operations. They successfully extricated the trapped victim and handed them over to medical personnel.
Eyewitnesses at the first accident site described the crash as severe, noting the visibly deformed state of the vehicle’s wreckage.
While the first rescue was still being managed, emergency crews were alerted to a second road accident at Asikuma Junction at approximately 10:04 a.m. This incident involved a MAN Diesel cargo truck carrying yams from Bimbila to Accra.
The cargo truck sustained serious damage, trapping three occupants within its wreckage. Fire officers quickly mobilized to the scene and launched a second intensive rescue operation.
All three individuals trapped in the second accident were successfully freed by the fire service personnel and received immediate medical attention from emergency responders. The exact nature and extent of the injuries sustained by the victims in both accidents have not yet been officially disclosed.
Authorities have initiated investigations into the circumstances that led to both collisions. The frequency of such accidents on major transport routes continues to be a pressing issue for road safety advocates and law enforcement agencies in Ghana.
These incidents highlight the critical role of emergency services like the GNFS in responding to road traffic accidents, particularly those involving entrapment. The promptness of their response and the effectiveness of their rescue techniques are vital in saving lives and mitigating the severity of injuries.
The accidents also draw attention to the condition of the Ho–Asikuma highway, a key artery for commerce and travel in the Volta Region. Questions may arise regarding traffic management, road infrastructure, and driver behavior that contribute to such occurrences.
The GNFS has consistently urged drivers to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition to prevent accidents. Public awareness campaigns often emphasize the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of road safety regulations.
As investigations proceed, the findings could lead to recommendations for improved road safety measures, enhanced traffic enforcement, or infrastructure upgrades along this corridor. The focus remains on preventing future tragedies and ensuring the safety of all road users.
The coming weeks will likely see continued scrutiny of road safety protocols in the region. Authorities will be keen to understand the contributing factors to these twin accidents to implement preventive strategies. The public will be watching for updates on the condition of the rescued individuals and the outcomes of the official inquiries.
