Ghana is fully prepared to contain any potential outbreaks of Ebola and Hantavirus, according to Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS). This assurance comes as the nation strengthens its disease preparedness systems in response to rising Ebola cases in Central and Eastern Africa.
Assessing Preparedness on the Ground
Dr. Kaba Akoriyea made these remarks on Monday, May 25, during an inspection tour of key health facilities and major entry points in Accra. The tour aimed to meticulously assess the country’s readiness to swiftly manage a potential outbreak.
The inspection covered critical sites including the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre, Nyaho Medical Centre, Kotoka International Airport, and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. These locations are vital for early detection, isolation, and treatment of infectious diseases.
Leveraging Past Experience and Robust Systems
Ghana possesses significant experience and established systems for managing infectious disease outbreaks. The nation successfully navigated the COVID-19 pandemic and has conducted previous Ebola preparedness exercises, bolstering its capacity.
