Bank of Scotland Celebrates World Cup Return with Commemorative Banknote
The Bank of Scotland has released a special, limited edition £20 banknote to commemorate Scotland’s qualification for the men’s FIFA World Cup, marking their first appearance in the international tournament since 1998. The unique design features an image inspired by Scott McTominay’s memorable overhead kick goal against Denmark, a pivotal moment in securing their place at the upcoming global event.
A Moment of National Pride Immortalized
Scotland’s men’s national team clinched their World Cup spot with a decisive 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden Park in Glasgow in November. Scott McTominay opened the scoring early in the match with a spectacular overhead kick, a goal that has now been immortalized on the commemorative currency. Only 100 of these unique notes have been printed.
Unique Distribution for a Historic Achievement
Fifty of the limited edition notes are being made available to the public through a combination of collector auctions and a prize draw. Additionally, two pop-up locations in Edinburgh and Glasgow will offer fans a chance to obtain a note through interactive challenges. The online auction and prize draw entries are open until 11:00 on Friday, June 26th.
McTominay’s Special Connection to the Commemorative Note
Midfielder Scott McTominay expressed his delight at seeing his goal featured on a Scottish banknote. He stated, “Reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of, and I know it means everything to our fans. Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special.”
Philanthropic Efforts Tied to the Release
Proceeds generated from the auction and prize draw will be donated to Crisis Scotland, a charity dedicated to supporting individuals experiencing homelessness. This initiative highlights the Bank of Scotland’s commitment to social causes alongside celebrating national sporting achievements.

Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at the Bank of Scotland, explained the rationale behind the design. “Securing qualification in such dramatic fashion is a moment fans will never forget, and we wanted to mark it in a way that’s rooted in Scottish identity,” she said. “Like football, banknotes have long been part of our country’s story, and this limited edition £20 note combines those two traditions with a modern, creative twist.”

Noble further commented on McTominay’s strike, noting, “Scott’s overhead kick is already regarded as one of the nation’s greatest ever goals.” She added, “It’s been a privilege to work with him to bring it to life in such a unique way, and we’re grateful for his support in helping raise funds for Crisis as they work to end homelessness across Scotland.”

The upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup will see an expanded format with 48 participating teams, hosted across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11th to July 19th.
