Mercy Johnson Sparks Outrage Over High-Priced Menstrual Kit

Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson Okojie is facing significant online criticism after being unveiled as the brand ambassador for Girls Tag, a menstrual care brand whose premium product is reportedly priced at N25,000 (approximately $18.24 USD). The backlash stems from the perceived insensitivity of the high cost, especially in a country where many women and girls struggle to afford basic menstrual hygiene products.

Context: The Launch and the Controversy

Girls Tag, marketed as an all-in-one period care pack for girls aged nine and above, recently launched its brand with Mercy Johnson and her daughter, Purity Okojie, as its prominent faces. Shortly after, fellow actress Regina Daniels was also announced as a brand ambassador, amplifying the product’s visibility.

However, the product’s launch quickly ignited a firestorm on social media platforms. Critics lambasted the N25,000 price tag as unrealistic and out of touch with the economic realities faced by millions of Nigerian women and girls. Many are forced to resort to unsafe or unhygienic alternatives due to the prohibitive cost of standard menstrual products, leading to missed school days and health concerns.

Public Reaction and Criticisms

Social media users expressed dismay and anger over the price point. User @Lai commented,
