The Ghana Medical Association (GMA), in collaboration with the Junior Doctors Association of Ghana and other partners, launched a nationwide wellness walk campaign in Accra on Saturday, May 9, 2026. The initiative aims to encourage healthier lifestyles among Ghanaians to combat the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by promoting physical activity and preventive healthcare.
Context: The Growing Burden of NCDs
Non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers, represent a significant and growing health challenge globally and in Ghana. These conditions are often linked to lifestyle factors, including diet, physical activity, and substance use. The GMA’s campaign seeks to address the root causes by shifting the focus from treatment to prevention.
GMA’s Call for Proactive Health
During the launch event, GMA President Ernest Yorke stressed the critical need for healthcare professionals to engage the public beyond clinical settings. He emphasized that doctors have a vital role in educating Ghanaians about the impact of lifestyle choices on disease prevention.
