Philip Amoateng, Managing Director of Telecel Cash and Digital Transformation, urged a significant shift in Africa’s rapidly expanding digital lending sector towards systems that prioritize the long-term financial well-being of consumers. This call to action came during a roundtable discussion, ‘Designing a Consumer‑Centric Digital Credit and Banking Ecosystem,’ held at the 3i Africa Summit 2026. The summit, focused on advancing innovation in Africa’s digital finance, highlighted the critical need for credit products tailored to the realities of low-income and informal-sector workers.
Context: The Rise of Digital Finance in Ghana
Ghana’s digital finance sector has witnessed remarkable growth, with mobile money transactions soaring to GH¢4.5 trillion in 2025, according to the Bank of Ghana. This expansion is particularly significant for the country’s workforce, where over 80 percent are employed in the informal sector. For these individuals, digital credit has become an essential tool not for large purchases, but for managing daily life expenses such as school fees, healthcare, utilities, and crucial working capital for their small businesses.
Designing for Vulnerable Populations
