Xenophobic Attacks Undermine African Unity, Ghanaian MP States

Mpraeso Member of Parliament, Davis Ansah Opoku, has sharply criticized the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, asserting that the ideal of African unity is rendered meaningless when African nationals are subjected to violence and assault.

In a Facebook post shared on Saturday, May 9, the MP drew a parallel between these attacks and Gold Fields’ request for a 20-year lease extension in Tarkwa, Ghana.

He suggested that Ghana should leverage this situation to highlight the significant contributions of Ghana’s mineral wealth to the South African economy.

“GoldFields is pleading with Ghana for a 20-year extension of its lease in Tarkwa,” the MP stated.

“Perhaps this is also the moment for the Government to remind them that Ghana’s mineral resources have contributed immensely to the growth and development of South Africa’s economy.”

Mr. Opoku emphasized the critical need for the South African government to demonstrate a genuine commitment to safeguarding African migrants, including Ghanaians, from targeted attacks and intimidation.

He pointed out that many Africans residing in South Africa are diligent workers striving to support their families, not individuals involved in criminal activities.

“The Government of South Africa must therefore take concrete and decisive steps to stop the xenophobic attacks against innocent Ghanaians and other Africans whose only aim is to work hard and provide for their families,” he wrote.

The MP concluded by warning that pronouncements of continental solidarity would lack substance if violence against Africans continues unabated.

“African unity cannot be preached in boardrooms while Africans are attacked on the streets,” he declared.
