Former England winger Raheem Sterling, 31, was arrested on Thursday morning on suspicion of drug-driving after his Lamborghini collided with barriers on the M3 motorway in Hampshire. The incident occurred just before 9 am near the Minley Interchange, with no other vehicles involved and no injuries reported.
Incident Details and Police Statement
Hampshire Police confirmed the arrest following reports of a single-vehicle collision. A 31-year-old man from Berkshire, identified as Sterling, was taken into custody.
The charges he faces include suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, dangerous driving, possession of a Class C drug, and failing to provide a specimen. He has since been released on bail pending further investigation.
In a statement, Hampshire Police said: “Just before 9 am on Thursday, we received reports that a Lamborghini was in collision with barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange. No other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported. The driver, a 31-year-old man from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen. He has been bailed while our enquiries continue.”
Sterling’s Recent Career and Personal Context
The arrest comes during a challenging period for the once-prolific forward. Sterling most recently played for Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, joining the club in February on a deal until the end of the season.
He departed Chelsea in January by mutual consent, agreeing a significant settlement for the remaining 18 months of his contract. His time at Stamford Bridge was brief, marked by just 59 league appearances over four years, including a loan spell at Arsenal, after his move from Manchester City in 2022.
A source close to Sterling confirmed the arrest to BBC Sport but disputed the drug allegations. “There is no proof of drugs in his system,” the source stated, adding that the player had endured “an extremely tough couple of years” and felt “worthless” and “forgotten about.”
Career Trajectory and England Recognition
Sterling enjoyed a highly successful career earlier in his career. He was a key figure in Manchester City’s dominance, winning four Premier League titles after leaving Liverpool in 2015.
He earned 82 caps for England, with his last international appearance coming at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. His transition to Feyenoord saw him make only eight appearances in the Netherlands.
Implications and Future Outlook
This incident casts a shadow over Sterling’s immediate future, both personally and professionally. The legal proceedings will likely impact his ability to secure a new club or continue his playing career.
The allegations of drug-driving and dangerous driving, if proven, could lead to significant penalties, including driving bans and potential criminal convictions. His reputation within the sport may also be affected.
Fans and observers will be watching closely as the police investigation unfolds. The outcome could determine whether this marks a significant turning point in the career of a once-celebrated talent.
