Accra, Ghana – The Acting Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), Ing. Dr Mark-Oliver Kevor, has urgently called for accountability regarding significant findings in the recent African Games audit report. Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Dr. Kevor emphasized that the issues, including substantial outstanding liabilities and questionable procurement practices, are too serious to be dismissed and necessitate formal responses from implicated officials before Parliament.
Procurement Irregularities Spark Concern
The audit report has brought to light alleged procurement irregularities by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the African Games. Specifically, concerns have been raised about 55 single-source contracts reportedly awarded without adequate justification.
Further exacerbating these concerns, eight of these contracts allegedly received post-facto approval from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), meaning authorization was sought only after the procurement processes were already underway.
Dr. Kevor highlighted that these revelations cast serious doubt on adherence to established procurement regulations and the effectiveness of oversight mechanisms within public institutions responsible for managing such large-scale events.
Significant Financial Liabilities Uncovered
The scale of the financial implications is a major point of concern. The audit report indicates outstanding liabilities amounting to approximately GH¢280 million.
Procurement activities documented in the report also run into hundreds of millions of cedis, underscoring the significant public funds involved.
