Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, is urging party members and executives to set aside past grievances and concentrate on unity and grassroots mobilization to secure victory in the 2028 general elections. Afoko made these calls during recent consultative meetings with regional executives, councils of elders, and patrons in the Western North, Ahafo, Bono, and Bono East regions.
Focus on the Future, Not Past Divisions
Afoko emphasized that dwelling on past conflicts hinders the party’s progress. He stated, “We must build bridges to the future, not the past.” His message resonated with younger party members and the broader base who, he noted, are more concerned with returning the NPP to power than rehashing old disputes.
During his nationwide engagements, Afoko stressed that the focus should shift from “who offended whom” to strategic planning and effective organization. The current period, he explained, is critical for the NPP to demonstrate its capacity to overcome internal divisions and foster a more mature political culture.
The “3R” Agenda for Cohesion
To guide the party’s renewal, Afoko introduced his “3R” agenda: Reunite, Rebuild, and Recapture. This initiative aims to restore cohesion within the NPP and strengthen its position for future electoral success. He believes this roadmap is essential for repositioning the party around unity, development, and inclusivity.
Afoko revealed that while he has previously supported the party privately, recent developments have prompted him to step forward publicly. “We need to get our party back into winning ways, and that starts with unity of purpose,” he declared.
Grassroots Mobilization and Confidence Building
The consultative meetings focused on strengthening the party’s grassroots structures. Afoko encouraged greater participation from younger members and advocated for rebuilding confidence across the party faithful. He urged members to avoid divisive rhetoric and tactics that could reopen old wounds.
The engagements are part of a broader nationwide outreach aimed at reconnecting with the party’s base. Afoko expressed optimism that party members will unite behind a common objective and work towards ensuring Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidency.
Looking Ahead: A Test of Maturity
Afoko’s message highlights a pivotal moment for the NPP, presenting a challenge to its members to move beyond internal strife. He cautioned that “the future will not wait for us to finish fighting the past.” The success of his “3R” agenda and the party’s ability to heed his call for unity will be crucial indicators of its preparedness for the 2028 elections.
The coming months will reveal whether the NPP can successfully implement Afoko’s vision of a cohesive and forward-looking political organization, crucial for recapturing power.
