Ghana Pursues National Airline to Bolster Aviation Sector and Economic Growth

President John Dramani Mahama announced on Monday, June 1, at the Ghana-UK Investment Summit 2026 in London that Ghana is actively working to establish a new national airline. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to enhance the nation’s aviation sector, improve international and regional connectivity, and stimulate economic development.

Strategic Aviation Hub Ambitions

The proposed national carrier aims to strengthen air links between Ghana, other African nations, and key global markets, with a specific focus on the United Kingdom. President Mahama highlighted that this move is crucial for positioning Ghana as a premier regional aviation hub.

By improving air transport, Ghana seeks to facilitate increased trade, boost tourism, and attract greater foreign investment. The airline is envisioned as a critical component of this economic diversification and growth strategy.

Infrastructure Development and Modernization

In parallel with the airline initiative, the Ghanaian government is undertaking significant expansion projects for its airport infrastructure. These upgrades are designed to handle increasing passenger and cargo volumes and to improve the overall efficiency of air transport services nationwide.
