Asante Akyem South Youth Rally Behind Eric Amofa for NPP Parliamentary Primary

A coalition of youth groups in Ghana’s Asante Akyem South Constituency has publicly urged NPP stalwart Eric Amofa to contest the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary. The call, formalized in a statement signed by spokesperson Dr. Clement Ofosuhene, highlights Mr. Amofa’s perceived visionary leadership and dedication to youth empowerment, education, and community development as key reasons for their endorsement.

Context: The Political Landscape of Asante Akyem South

The Asante Akyem South Constituency is a significant electoral area within the Ashanti Region of Ghana. As a stronghold of the NPP, the party’s parliamentary primary often garners considerable attention, as the winner is highly likely to secure the seat in the general elections. This primary is therefore a crucial stepping stone for aspiring candidates seeking to represent the constituency in Ghana’s Parliament.

A Vision for Empowerment: Eric Amofa’s Track Record

The youth coalition specifically pointed to Mr. Amofa’s consistent efforts in human empowerment, education, and community development as foundational to their support. They emphasized his role as the Founder and CEO of the EKAJ Educational Fund.

The statement detailed how Mr. Amofa has channeled resources into training young people in various technical and vocational skills. This initiative is seen by the groups as a direct intervention that improves livelihoods and expands opportunities for the youth in the area.

“Mr. Eric Amofa, Founder and CEO of the EKAJ Educational Fund, has consistently championed education and youth development through practical interventions that improve livelihoods and expand opportunities for young people,” the statement read.

The youth groups expressed strong confidence that Mr. Amofa’s leadership would inject renewed energy and drive progress within the constituency. They have pledged their full support, promising to mobilize backing across Asante Akyem South should he accept their call to enter the parliamentary race.

The EKAJ Educational Fund: A Closer Look

Established in 2023, the EKAJ Educational Fund was founded by Eric Amofa with an initial capital of GHS100,000. Its stated mission is to create equitable educational opportunities for bright but financially disadvantaged youth, not only within Asante Akyem South but also across Ghana.

According to Mr. Amofa, the fund has already made tangible contributions. It has provided financial sponsorship to 15 senior high school students and 10 tertiary students. Furthermore, 5,000 exercise books have been distributed to needy students in all 10 senior high schools within Asante Akyem South.

The fund’s impact extends to infrastructure and direct support. It donated 50 bags of cement to Dampong Jubilee SHS for the construction of a girls’ hostel. Other contributions include five ceiling fans to Kyempo Faith JHS and GHS5,000 along with 20 study desks to Banso Presby SHS.

Significantly, the EKAJ Educational Fund also provides start-up tools and funding for apprenticeships specifically for persons with disabilities (PWDs), addressing a critical need for inclusive economic empowerment.

Implications and Future Outlook

The vocal endorsement from a coalition of youth groups signals a potentially strong grassroots movement behind Eric Amofa. For the NPP, such internal mobilization can be a significant factor in the primary elections. The focus on tangible development projects and skills training by Mr. Amofa’s foundation resonates with the needs of young constituents, potentially setting a precedent for candidate engagement.

As the NPP prepares for its parliamentary primaries, the dynamics within Asante Akyem South will be closely watched. The youth’s proactive stance suggests a desire for candidates who demonstrate a clear commitment to practical development and empowerment initiatives. The coming weeks will likely see further declarations of support or opposition, and whether Eric Amofa formally accepts the call to contest will be a key development to monitor.
