Chairman Wontumi Declares Readiness to Lead NPP in 2028 Elections

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has declared his intention to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, asserting that his political career, marked by significant trials and sustained trust from the party, has prepared him for the role. He made these statements during consultations with delegates and stakeholders in Accra over the weekend.

A Journey Forged in Hardship

Chairman Wontumi framed his leadership aspirations as a direct result of his extensive experience within the NPP’s organizational structure, highlighting that his political path has been characterized by constant challenges rather than ease.

“I have never had the luxury of an easy election,” Wontumi stated. “Every battle has been hard fought. But those trials did not break me. They built me.”

From Grassroots to Regional Powerhouse

Reflecting on his ascent within the party, from constituency-level involvement to serving three consecutive terms as Ashanti Regional Chairman, Wontumi emphasized his role in fortifying the NPP’s electoral base in its most crucial stronghold.

“The grassroots made me. I owe them everything,” he affirmed, underscoring his connection to the party’s foundational support.

Loyalty and Action Over Eloquence

The aspirant stressed that true party loyalty is demonstrated through tangible actions, particularly during critical electoral periods and national campaigns. He pointed to his support for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s presidential bids as an example of prioritizing party victory over personal preferences.

“When the party chose Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, I put personal preference aside and worked for victory. That is what loyalty looks like. Not in words, but in work,” he elaborated.

Wontumi also suggested that the NPP’s primary need is not for intellectual discourse but for practical, results-driven leadership. He contrasted his approach with that of more eloquent speakers within the party.

“We do not need more polished English. We need a working chairman. The NPP has no shortage of elites and eloquent speakers. I am here to deliver results,” he declared.

A Vision for the Future

Outlining his strategic vision, Chairman Wontumi detailed four key pillars for his leadership: unifying the party from the grassroots to the national level, rebuilding essential party structures, ensuring victory for the NPP in 2028 under the presidential candidacy of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and expanding opportunities for the youth within the party.

Addressing Legal Challenges

Wontumi directly addressed ongoing legal proceedings involving him, reaffirming his commitment to due process and asserting that these challenges do not impede his ability to serve the party.

“Let me address the elephant in the room. My legal challenges do not disqualify me from serving. I respect the law. I believe in due process,” he stated.

He drew parallels with historical leaders who faced adversity while in service, emphasizing the importance of integrity and resilience. “History is full of leaders who were tried in the fire while serving their people. What matters is integrity. What matters is resilience. I have both,” Wontumi asserted.

Commitment to Service and Mobilization

His campaign, he explained, is founded on principles of service, discipline, and effective grassroots mobilization. He positioned himself as a “working chairman” dedicated to continuous engagement with all levels of the party structure.

“I am not asking to be served. I am asking to serve,” Wontumi concluded, reiterating his commitment to strengthening internal cohesion and preparing the NPP for a successful 2028 election bid.
