Peki Road Carnage: 23 Injured Treated, 2 Referred as Authorities Grapple with Frequent Accidents

Twenty-three victims of a severe head-on collision involving a container truck and a passenger bus in Peki-Tsame, Volta Region, are currently receiving treatment at Peki Government Hospital. Administrator Jacob Agbanu-Torvinya confirmed Tuesday, June 2, that two individuals with critical injuries have been referred to other facilities, while the remaining 23, comprising 16 males and seven females, are in stable condition and responding to care. The accident, which occurred recently, also resulted in at least 15 confirmed fatalities at the scene.

Emergency Response and Hospital Management

Emergency response teams, including the National Ambulance Service and the Ghana National Fire Service, were swift in their actions, transporting the injured to Peki Government Hospital. Upon arrival, the hospital activated its medical emergency protocols to manage the influx of patients. Mr. Agbanu-Torvinya stated that no additional deaths have occurred at the hospital beyond those pronounced dead at the crash site.

Victim Identification and Family Support

The hospital is facilitating support for the injured, with many relatives arriving to be with their loved ones. However, two patients remain unidentified, and their families have yet to come forward. Hospital staff are working to connect these individuals with their families.

Recurring Road Safety Concerns

The incident has amplified concerns about road safety in the Peki area. Mr. Agbanu-Torvinya highlighted that road accidents are a frequent occurrence along the stretch where the collision took place. He noted that the hospital records an average of two to three such incidents monthly, ranging from minor injuries to fatalities.
