National Chief Imam Appeals for Calm Amidst Eid-ul-Adha Dispute

Accra, Ghana – The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has issued a fervent call for peace, unity, and reconciliation among members of the Ahlussunnah Wal Jamaah (ASWAJ) following disruptions that marred this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebrations in Accra. The appeal, made in a statement on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, addresses confusion that arose within segments of the Muslim community during the sacred festivities.

Context of the Dispute

The disturbances reportedly stemmed from long-standing disagreements concerning leadership legitimacy, constitutional interpretation, and financial accountability within the ASWAJ fraternity. These internal tensions escalated on Eid day, specifically over the authorization of one of two Deputy National Imams to lead the special congregational prayer held at the forecourt of Parliament House in Accra.

Eid-ul-Adha: A Time for Reflection

Sheikh Sharubutu described the incident as a “painful irony,” highlighting that Eid-ul-Adha is traditionally a period dedicated to worship, thanksgiving, sacrifice, reflection, and the strengthening of communal bonds. The statement, signed by his Personal Assistant, Dr Mohammed Marzuq Abubakari Azindoo, expressed deep concern over the events, deeming them unfortunate and contrary to the spirit of the occasion.

“He therefore calls on the factions involved to allow peace and reconciliation to prevail,” the statement noted, emphasizing the need to preserve harmony within the Muslim community.

Preserving Ghana’s Interfaith Harmony

The Chief Imam underscored the importance of maintaining cordial relations among Muslims, especially within Ghana, a nation widely recognized for its tolerance and peaceful coexistence among different faiths. He suggested that Ghana’s international reputation for interfaith harmony should serve as a model for fostering stronger intra-faith unity among Muslims.

“The Grand Imam contends that in a country defined by interfaith harmony of global repute, intra-faith cordiality should be a celebrated norm,” the statement read. He urged members of the ASWAJ community, particularly the youth, to show respect for constituted leadership and refrain from actions that could deepen divisions within the Muslim Ummah.

Respectful Discourse and Accountability

Addressing the public exchanges among rival groups, Sheikh Sharubutu stressed that while Islam encourages constructive criticism and accountability, such engagements must be conducted with decency and respect. He stated that “Islam endorses criticism, but Muslims are obliged to criticize within the confines of decency, rationality, humility, and legality.”

The Chief Imam further cautioned against the use of offensive language and personal attacks, asserting that “language vulgarism in the name of leadership criticism is incompatible with Islamic moralism.”

Call for Patience and Reconciliation

The respected cleric appealed to leaders on all sides of the dispute to exercise patience, tolerance, and forgiveness as efforts to resolve the impasse continue. He acknowledged that disagreements are inevitable in any organization but emphasized that the true test of leadership lies in finding peaceful and lasting solutions.

“He contends that the failure of Ahlussunnah will not be judged by the possibility of conflicts among them, but by the impossibility of solutions to the conflicts,” the statement explained. To facilitate reconciliation, the National Chief Imam declared his readiness to support initiatives aimed at finding an amicable settlement through both religious and secular mechanisms, while stressing that the ultimate responsibility rests with all stakeholders within the ASWAJ community.

Quranic Admonition for Unity

In his concluding appeal, Sheikh Sharubutu urged Muslims to be guided by the teachings of the Holy Quran, prioritizing brotherhood, unity, and mutual respect. He cited Quran 49:10: “The believers are but brothers, so make reconciliation between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.” The Chief Imam prayed for unity, peace, and divine guidance for the Muslim community, expressing hope that the unfortunate events surrounding Eid-ul-Adha would spur reflection and a renewed commitment to harmony.

“May Allah unify and bless the Ummah. Ameen,” the statement concluded.
