A nine-year-old girl in Savanna Junction, near Tema Community 25, is experiencing deep emotional distress after witnessing armed police officers enforce a court-ordered eviction of her family’s home on Wednesday, June 3. The incident, stemming from a long-running land dispute, has left dozens of residents displaced and fearing for their future.
Context of the Land Dispute
The affected families claim they legally purchased their plots from individuals they believed held legitimate ownership. Their belief was reportedly supported by earlier court decisions. However, a private developer, armed with a recent court judgment declaring him the rightful owner, initiated the eviction with the support of police personnel.
The operation saw household items removed from homes and possessions piled outside, forcing residents to scramble to salvage their belongings. Many expressed shock and frustration, stating they were not adequately notified of the latest judgment or the impending eviction.
A Child’s Traumatic Experience
The nine-year-old girl recounted the terrifying experience of seeing police officers, some allegedly masked, enter her family’s home. She described her fear upon seeing what she believed to be real guns, a stark contrast to the toy water guns she was familiar with.
“I just realised my father and my mother were fighting for the house, and I’ve not really seen somebody holding like a real gun,” she stated. “I’ve only seen water guns, those playful toys. And I was really, really traumatised.”
Despite her mother’s reassurances that everything would be okay, the child expressed profound sadness at leaving the only home she had known for over a decade.
Families Face Uncertainty
Abba, the mother of the nine-year-old, described the emotional toll the eviction has had on her family. Her family of six, including four children, had lived in their four-bedroom home for 13 years. They now face the challenge of finding a new place to stay, with their belongings loaded onto trucks.
“We were forced out, I should say, because we are dealing with armed men,” Abba said, emphasizing the powerlessness felt in the face of armed officers. She confirmed that officials entered all parts of their home to remove their belongings.
Another resident, Kin Lumor, whose five-bedroom house was also locked up, expressed his deep uncertainty about his immediate future. “Do I even know where I’m sleeping today?” he questioned, highlighting the precarious situation many residents find themselves in.
Community Impact and Support
The plight of these families gained public attention after Abba shared her story on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show. The broadcast led to an unexpected offer of temporary shelter from a member of the public, providing a glimmer of hope for her family.
However, for many other residents, the future remains uncertain. Reporters visiting the site on Wednesday observed residents loading furniture and appliances onto vehicles, with an atmosphere of frustration and uncertainty prevailing. Many have invested their life savings into these properties, believing they had secured legal ownership.
Legal Battles and Disputed Ownership
The core of the issue lies in a complex land dispute where residents believe they acquired their properties legally from previous owners. They contend that earlier court rulings supported their claims. The lack of prior notification regarding the latest judgment has intensified their sense of injustice.
Looking Ahead
The immediate concern for dozens of families is securing stable housing and understanding their legal recourse. The incident raises critical questions about property rights, the enforcement of court orders, and the protection of vulnerable populations, particularly children, during such operations. Future developments will likely focus on how these legal disputes are resolved and what measures can be put in place to prevent similar traumatic evictions.
