Ghanaian Para-Swimming Makes Historic Commonwealth Games Debut, Fueled by Emerging Leadership

Accra, Ghana – The upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games will mark a historic moment for Ghana as para-swimmer Promise Aheto becomes the nation’s first-ever athlete to qualify in para-swimming. This significant achievement, realized within approximately three years of intensified efforts, has been attributed to the strategic leadership of Ms. Farida Iddriss, the current president of Ghana’s para-sports association.

Pioneering Qualification

Promise Aheto secured his spot at the prestigious global event following exceptional performances at the World Para Swimming Series held in Australia earlier this year. His dedication and skill were evident in his personal best times.

Aheto clocked 1 minute and 38.58 seconds in the men’s 100m breaststroke S9 category. He also achieved a time of 31.72 seconds in the men’s 50m freestyle S13. These results officially confirmed his qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Leadership Recognition

The success is being hailed as a testament to the forward-thinking approach of Ms. Farida Iddriss, who assumed leadership of the para-sports association in 2025. Africa Paralympic Committee President Samson Deen lauded her contribution at the recent unveiling of para-athletes for the Games.
