Ahead of Father's Day, Ghanaian Musician Urges Greater Appreciation for Paternal Sacrifices

Ghanaian singer BongoFari has called on mothers to actively help their children recognize and appreciate the sacrifices fathers make, particularly as Father’s Day approaches. His plea comes after revealing a personal instance where he sold his music equipment to fund a life-saving emergency C-section for his wife and newborn child, a sacrifice his children remained unaware of for years.

The Unseen Paternal Efforts

BongoFari shared his experience in an interview with JoyNews on June 3, highlighting the often-unacknowledged struggles many fathers face. He detailed how, as a father who depends on singing gigs for income, a critical moment arose when he lacked funds for the emergency procedure.

“As a father, I’ve made a lot of sacrifices,” BongoFari stated. “I remember a time when I didn’t have money and had to sell my studio equipment to save my wife’s life and the baby’s life during a caesarean section.”

He further elaborated that despite his significant contributions and hardships, his children did not grasp the extent of his efforts. “When my children grew up, they never knew what I went through to bring them into the world. My wife didn’t tell them,” he lamented. “I paid their school fees and did a whole lot of things, but the children would say, ‘Daddy, you don’t give us anything.’ They didn’t know I had been giving everything to their mother.”

Fathers’ Responsibilities and Societal Perceptions

The musician also addressed the issue of fathers abandoning their responsibilities, especially during marital difficulties. He acknowledged that some men contribute to negative stereotypes of fatherhood through actions like infidelity and domestic abuse.

“Some fathers are not doing the right thing. Some mistreat their wives, while others engage in extramarital affairs,” BongoFari observed. “We need to educate men to understand that their wives are their partners and that there should be transparency in the relationship.”

A Call for Maternal Support in Recognition

BongoFari specifically urged mothers to play a role in ensuring fathers’ contributions are recognized. He believes that mothers can help bridge the gap in children’s understanding.

“The ladies are overshadowing the men,” he commented. “When a father provides something for the children, it is important to let them know it came from their father. The children’s memory is still developing, so they may not know who is doing what in the home.”

He emphasized the critical role fathers play in child-rearing and overall family welfare, asserting that they deserve more societal and familial appreciation.

Context of Father’s Day Celebrations

BongoFari’s remarks come as families prepare to observe Father’s Day, a day set aside to honor the sacrifices, commitment, and impact of fathers and father figures. The musician’s personal story serves as a poignant reminder of the often-unseen efforts that underpin family life.

Beyond personal reflection, organizations like JOY BRANDS are planning special events, such as the “JOY SAFARI ESCAPE” on June 20, to celebrate fathers. This event aims to provide a memorable weekend experience for fathers and father figures, featuring activities like an island party, boat cruising, and animal feeding, fostering family bonding and relaxation.

Looking Ahead: Fostering Intergenerational Appreciation

The conversation initiated by BongoFari points to a broader need for open communication within families about parental efforts and sacrifices. As society continues to evolve, the role of fathers is increasingly recognized as multifaceted and crucial. The challenge moving forward will be to cultivate an environment where both parents’ contributions are equally valued and communicated to children, ensuring that paternal sacrifices are not only made but also seen and appreciated. This could involve more deliberate conversations within households and potentially educational initiatives that highlight the importance of acknowledging all family providers. The effectiveness of such efforts will be key to fostering stronger family bonds and a more balanced societal understanding of parenting roles.
