Healthcare Workers Face Rising Violence, Threatening Ghana's Health System

The Ghana Nurses-Midwife Trainees Association (GNMTA) has raised an alarm over an escalating trend of physical assaults against nurses and midwives across Ghana, citing a recent incident at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic as a catalyst. This surge in violence is reportedly deterring aspiring healthcare professionals and severely impacting the nation’s ability to deliver essential health services.

Rising Tide of Violence Against Healthcare Providers

The GNMTA’s concerns were amplified following an alleged assault on a nurse at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic. The nurse was reportedly attacked by a patient’s relative after enforcing the clinic’s policy on visiting hours.

This incident has brought to the forefront the daily risks healthcare workers face while performing their duties. Abankwa Takyiawa, President of the Ashanti-Brong Ahafo Zone (ASHBA) of GNMTA, condemned the act during the Association’s 33rd Annual Delegates Congress in Ejisu Krapa, Ashanti Region.
