Ghana’s Cycle of Tragedy: Neurosurgeon Cites May 9 Parallel in Amissah Death

Neurosurgeon Dr. Hadi Mohammed Abdallah has drawn a stark parallel between the recent death of engineer Charles Amissah and past national tragedies, including the May 9 stadium disaster, arguing that Ghana repeatedly makes the same mistakes in handling national crises. Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, Dr. Abdallah expressed his dismay at the findings of a committee investigating Amissah’s death, which revealed the 29-year-old engineer died from medical neglect after being denied emergency care by three major Accra hospitals.

Systemic Neglect and Emotional Reactions

The committee’s conclusion, finding Amissah’s death to be a result of medical neglect, was not surprising to Dr. Abdallah, who described the outcome as both sad and alarming. He noted a recurring pattern where national tragedies evoke strong emotional responses but fail to translate into meaningful, lasting reforms.
