Ghanaian Media Tasked to Champion Gender Equity Under New Affirmative Action Law

Accra, Ghana – May 16, 2024 – Ghana’s Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has called upon media practitioners to actively promote the nation’s newly enacted Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, urging them to move beyond simple reporting and become instrumental in achieving the law’s mandate of a minimum 30% representation for women in political, economic, and social institutions.

Context of the Affirmative Action Act

The landmark legislation, officially passed in 2024, sets a clear goal: to ensure women constitute at least 30% of leadership and decision-making roles across various sectors. This is a crucial step towards the overarching objective of achieving full gender parity by the year 2034.

Media’s Pivotal Role in Implementation

Speaking at a dedicated media engagement session held on Thursday, May 14, Minister Lartey underscored the indispensable nature of a strong partnership between her ministry and the media. She emphasized that the success of the Affirmative Action Act hinges significantly on the media’s ability to foster public understanding and hold institutions accountable.
