A delegation of eight senior correctional officers from the Nigerian Correctional Service, accompanied by three officials from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), visited Ghana’s Ankaful Prison Complex in the Central Region on May 13, 2026. The study tour aimed to foster international cooperation, exchange best practices, and gain practical insights into Ghana’s correctional administration, focusing on security, rehabilitation, and inmate welfare.
Strengthening Correctional Administration Through Collaboration
The visit underscored the commitment of both Ghana and Nigeria to advancing correctional systems in West Africa. Central Regional Commander of the Ghana Prisons Service, Joseph Asabre, welcomed the Nigerian delegation, led by Assistant Controller General of Corrections Lakatile Cyrus Cham. Asabre highlighted the visit as a testament to the enduring cooperation between the two nations.
He emphasized that such engagements are crucial for professional learning and institutional collaboration, enabling the exchange of vital expertise in areas like prison security, inmate rehabilitation, and staff development. Asabre noted the importance of collaboration in addressing contemporary challenges and building humane, effective correctional systems.
