The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced planned and emergency power maintenance exercises for Friday, May 15, 2026, affecting significant portions of the Ashanti and Western Regions. These disruptions stem from ongoing efforts to address multiple technical challenges, including a recent punctured underground cable incident in Accra West that caused widespread outages on Thursday.
Context of Network Strain
The scheduled maintenance comes at a time when ECG is grappling with persistent technical faults across its network. These issues require immediate attention to prevent more severe and prolonged disruptions in the future. The company cites the need for these exercises to ensure the long-term reliability and robustness of the power distribution infrastructure.
Scheduled Outages in Ashanti Region
In the Ashanti Region, a planned maintenance operation is slated to run from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on Friday. This extensive exercise will impact a broad list of communities. Affected areas include Edwenase, Kwadaso, Nwamase, Apire, Ampatia, Bebu, Dako, Adumasa, Ampabame No.1 and 2, Mpatasie, Trede, Sabin Akrofrom, Takyiman, Denkyembouso, Ohuwmasi, Hill Top, parts of Asouyeboa, and parts of Tanoso. Additionally, Yabi, Merewadwa, Kokode, Aburaso, Kromoase, Akyeremade, Chichibon, Gyekye, Dida, Odeneho Kwadaso, OWASS, parts of Kwadaso, Agric Amanfrom, Santasi, Fankyenebra, Apemanim, Boko, Twedie, Foase, Manso Nkwanta, Antoakrom, Nweneso, Manso Adubia, and surrounding vicinities will experience power interruptions.
Western Region Maintenance and Emergency Works
The Western Region will also see power disruptions. A planned maintenance operation is scheduled from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, primarily affecting Fiji Articulator Park and its adjacent areas. Concurrently, an emergency maintenance exercise will be conducted from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, impacting Aboso township, Damang, Fante Mines, Bogoso Junction, New Site, Budo City, and surrounding communities. The emergency nature of this latter exercise suggests a more critical fault requiring immediate attention.
Recent Technical Faults in Accra West
These planned interventions follow a challenging Thursday for ECG in the Accra West Region. Multiple technical faults led to significant power outages. A fault at Pentecost Junction disrupted supply to Borkorborkor, Numbotse, Afuaman, Manhean, and Mallam Issah, among other areas. Engineers were dispatched to address this issue and restore power.
In a separate incident, a punctured underground cable at Mango Lane caused further outages. This fault affected key areas including Weija Junction, Menskrom, Jayee University, Regent University, and Mango Lane. Notably, both educational institutions experienced power supply disruptions, impacting academic activities.
ECG’s Response and Apology
In its public advisories, the ECG extended apologies to all customers affected by both the scheduled maintenance and the unexpected technical faults. The company acknowledged the inconvenience caused and reassured the public of its engineers’ diligent efforts to resolve all network issues. ECG emphasized that the planned exercises, though inconvenient, are crucial steps toward ensuring the long-term stability and reliability of the power network across the affected regions.
Implications and Future Watch
The recurring technical faults and the necessity for frequent maintenance highlight potential underlying issues within ECG’s infrastructure, possibly related to aging equipment or increased demand. Customers in the affected regions should prepare for the scheduled outages by taking necessary precautions. For the industry, this situation underscores the critical importance of continuous investment in network upgrades and preventative maintenance. Observers will be watching to see if ECG can stabilize its network and reduce the frequency of such disruptions. The company’s ability to manage these challenges will be key to maintaining public trust and ensuring consistent power supply for economic activities and daily life.
