Accra, Ghana – President John Mahama’s administration is maintaining that there is no immediate urgency to appoint a substantive Defence Minister, asserting that the ministry is functioning effectively under its current interim leadership. Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated on Monday that the absence of a dedicated minister has not created any significant lapses in Ghana’s security architecture.
Context of the Vacancy
The discussion arose on JoyNews’ PM Express program, where host Evans Mensah highlighted the prolonged vacancy in the Defence Ministry. This situation has persisted despite earlier indications from the President that a new minister would be named following the Christmas period. Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese, defended the government’s stance, emphasizing the President’s prerogative in ministerial appointments.
