The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) recently concluded a significant sensitisation mission and external court sessions in Conakry, Guinea. The week-long initiative, which ran from May 13 to May 18, aimed to bolster access to justice, foster deeper stakeholder engagement, and elevate public understanding of the court’s functions across ECOWAS Member States.
Bridging the Justice Gap
The primary objective of the sensitisation mission was to educate citizens and key stakeholders about the ECOWAS Court’s mandate, its jurisdiction, procedural frameworks, and how individuals and entities can access its services. This outreach is a critical step in demystifying regional justice mechanisms for the average citizen.
Activities during the mission were diverse and inclusive. They featured in-depth stakeholder engagements, technical working sessions, and open, interactive discussions. A dedicated forum catered to legal professionals and students, providing a platform for dialogue and knowledge sharing.
Further strengthening judicial ties, a judicial dialogue brought together judges from the ECOWAS Court and their counterparts within the Guinean judiciary. This exchange aimed to foster mutual understanding and collaboration on legal matters affecting the region.

External Court Sessions Deliver Justice
Following the successful sensitisation drive, the ECOWAS Court of Justice convened its external court sessions in Conakry from May 15 to May 18. These sittings were conducted in a hybrid format, accommodating both physical and virtual participation to maximize accessibility.
During these sessions, the court delivered a total of 16 decisions, comprising 14 Judgments and 2 Rulings. Additionally, 8 new cases were heard, marking significant progress in adjudicating matters brought before the regional court.
These external sessions are a deliberate strategy by the ECOWAS Court to bring its judicial functions closer to the populace it serves. By holding sessions in different member states, the court aims to enhance the understanding of regional justice systems, cultivate stronger partnerships with national institutions, and champion the principles of the rule of law and human rights protection throughout West Africa.
