Sekondi, Ghana – Former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has accused the current government of employing arrests and denial of bail as strategic tools to intimidate political opposition, particularly targeting members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Mercer made these claims on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, May 23, asserting a deliberate pattern of using state institutions against NPP figures.
Pattern of Intimidation Alleged
Mercer stated that while the NPP does not endorse insults in political discourse, the government’s response to controversial public statements has become disproportionately harsh and politically motivated. He specifically questioned the necessity of arresting and denying bail to individuals accused of minor offenses under Sections 207 and 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, especially while investigations are still pending.
