Odelia Tamakloe, Chief Medical Laboratory Scientist and Laboratory Manager at the National Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, has urged Ghanaians to prioritize routine medical screening and preventive healthcare. This call comes in the wake of a free health screening exercise held last Friday in New Achimota, Accra, aimed at curbing the rising tide of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country.
Context: The Silent Threat of NCDs
Many individuals in Ghana live with serious health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes without realizing their status. This lack of awareness stems from infrequent visits to health facilities for regular check-ups, leaving potentially life-threatening diseases undetected until advanced stages.
The National Cardiothoracic Centre plays a crucial role in Ghana’s healthcare landscape, serving not only the domestic population but also patients referred from other African nations like Nigeria, Cameroon, and Togo for specialized cardiothoracic surgeries. These complex procedures are often expensive, underscoring the Centre’s reliance on support from corporate organizations and partners.
