Accra, Ghana – Afrotoons, a pioneering animation studio dedicated to showcasing authentic African narratives to a worldwide audience, officially commenced operations yesterday in a vibrant ceremony in Accra. The event, attended by prominent cultural figures, diplomats, and influential stakeholders from Africa’s creative and development sectors, signals a significant advancement in the production and dissemination of African children’s content.
The launch marks a pivotal moment for Afrotoons as it establishes a globally scalable platform for African children’s stories, beginning with its inaugural animated series, “Selase’s Adventures.” Attendees were treated to an exclusive preview of the first episode, offering a glimpse into the studio’s vision.
“Last night wasn’t just a launch – it was a signal,” stated Adhavan Adityan, COO of Afrotoons. “A signal that African stories are no longer waiting for permission. They’re stepping onto the global stage – boldly, authentically, and at scale.” Adityan emphasized the studio’s commitment to empowering African voices and narratives.
Institutional and Diplomatic Support Bolsters Creative Economy
The pre-launch celebration drew a distinguished assembly, highlighting the escalating interest in Africa’s burgeoning creative economy. The event was expertly hosted and moderated by Carlian T. Flormann, who maintained an energetic and positive atmosphere throughout the evening.
Notable attendees included Kafui Danku-Pitcher, CEO of Ghana’s National Film Authority (NFA); Carl Ampah, National Programme Officer for Culture at UNESCO; Donya Eldridge, Cultural Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy Ghana; Nii Tetteh Nettey, Public Engagement Specialist at the U.S. Embassy Ghana; Sonya Sagan, Social and Behaviour Change Manager at UNICEF; and Esben Emborg, Innovative Finance Specialist at UNICEF.
This strong representation from governmental bodies and international organizations underscores a growing synergy between public and private sectors in championing African storytelling and creative industries on a global scale. Their presence signifies a collective commitment to fostering cultural exchange and economic growth through media.
A Personal Vision Fuels Global Ambition
For the leadership at Afrotoons, the company’s mission is deeply rooted in personal experiences and a desire to correct historical underrepresentation.
Ama Adi Dako-Seidu, Chief Content Officer of Afrotoons, shared a poignant reflection: “My first main character was named Anna. Not Ama. It never even occurred to me that a Ghanaian child could be the hero of the story.” She added, “And that’s what tonight is really about. Because what we’re building with Afrotoons is more than animation. It’s a quiet but powerful shift. It’s saying that African stories are not side notes. They are center stage.”
Co-Founder & CEO Esther Ohrt Paul elaborated on the genesis of the company’s vision. “I asked myself a simple question: What did I grow up watching? And I realized…I couldn’t name a single African cartoon. Not one.” She continued, “And that wasn’t a failure of our schools. It was a gap. A gap in storytelling. A gap in imagination. A gap in what was being created for us… and by us. So I started writing.” This personal realization fueled the drive to create content that reflects and celebrates African identity.
Tapping into a Global Market with African Roots
Afrotoons enters the global children’s content market, a sector valued at over $100 billion, where African narratives have historically been significantly underrepresented. The studio aims to address this disparity by producing high-quality, culturally rich, and educational content designed to engage both African children and the global diaspora.
The studio’s digital-first distribution strategy, starting with YouTube, is designed for maximum reach and accessibility. This approach allows Afrotoons to connect directly with its target audience while building brand recognition before potentially expanding to a dedicated OTT platform.
Flagship Series: “Selase’s Adventures” Leads the Way
Central to Afrotoons’ debut is “Selase’s Adventures,” a short-form animated series aimed at children aged 4–7 and their families. The series features Selase, an inquisitive young explorer who embarks on journeys across the African continent.
Through immersive storytelling, Selase discovers diverse cultures, traditions, and histories, offering viewers an educational and entertaining experience. Season 1 will comprise 13 episodes, with production already underway and a full rollout anticipated in 2026.
Positioned for Future Growth and Collaboration
With initial production progressing and a growing network of strategic partners, Afrotoons is strategically positioned at the vanguard of a new generation of African media companies focused on global reach from inception. The launch event fostered crucial connections among creators, policymakers, investors, and cultural leaders, laying the groundwork for future collaborations and sustained expansion within the continent’s vibrant creative landscape.
