A group identifying as the Concerned Patriots of Ahafo Ano North Constituency has secured a court injunction against the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing polling station elections. The legal action, filed on an unspecified date but impacting recent party activities, halts all subsequent elections for party officers within the constituency until irregularities in the conduct of elections in twenty-three outstanding polling stations are lawfully resolved. The group cites a series of procedural breaches and a lack of responsiveness from party leadership as the catalyst for their decision.
Party Mechanisms Exhausted, Court Intervention Deemed Necessary
Ayisi Asare Awuah, an electoral area communications officer for the group, stated that seeking legal recourse became unavoidable after all internal party avenues for dispute resolution proved ineffective. The Concerned Patriots are petitioning the court to declare the failure to conduct elections in the remaining twenty-three out of the constituency’s 139 polling stations as unlawful and unjustified.
Their demands extend to an order for the polling station elections to be completed before any constituency-level elections proceed. Furthermore, the group seeks the removal of the current representative of the regional executives overseeing the elections and insists that future elections must strictly adhere to party regulations.
Allegations of Irregularities and Defections
The Concerned Patriots allege that several guidelines for the conduct of the elections were breached throughout the process, from the issuance of nomination forms to the actual voting. Specific accusations include the alleged disregard for the vetting process and the notice of poll by constituency executives and the regional representative.
According to the group, these anomalies were reported to the party’s elections committee, but their concerns were ignored. “They ignored us when we drew their attention, but we thought it was just because the process was still early,” Awuah told JoyNews.
Further allegations suggest that the electoral register used in some areas was manipulated to favor specific candidates. “Some persons were bused from a different constituency to participate in our elections. They moved to various polling stations to choose our leaders for us,” Awuah claimed.
The group also reported that attempts by some party members to resist these irregularities led to disturbances, resulting in injuries and damage to party members’ vehicles. These incidents were reportedly referred to the police.
The aggrieved members contend that the disregard for election regulations has already led to some affected party members defecting to other political groups. They fear this trend could negatively impact the NPP’s electoral performance in the constituency during upcoming general elections.
Narrow Electoral Margins and Political Stakes
The political stakes in Ahafo Ano North are particularly high, given the narrow margin by which the incumbent NPP Member of Parliament, Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh, retained the seat in the last election. His victory was by approximately 120 votes, a result that was subsequently contested by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) aspirant, Kwasi Adusei.
A petition submitted to the constituency, regional, and national executives of the NPP regarding these electoral issues has, according to the Concerned Patriots, yet to yield any action. The court injunction represents a significant escalation in the dispute, highlighting deep divisions within the local party structure.
Future Outlook and Watchpoints
The injunction’s impact will be closely watched as it directly affects the NPP’s internal organizational timeline. The resolution of this legal challenge could set a precedent for how electoral disputes are handled within the party. Observers will be monitoring whether the court orders a rerun of the disputed elections and if the NPP leadership addresses the systemic issues raised by the Concerned Patriots. The ability of the NPP to reconcile these internal conflicts will be crucial for its electoral prospects in the Ahafo Ano North Constituency, especially given the slim margins of past victories. The party’s response and the court’s final decision will determine the stability of its local leadership and its readiness for future political contests.
