Thirty-one students from the Amansie West and Amansie South districts are currently receiving vital financial support through the Asanko Scholarship Programme, now in its second year. This initiative aims to remove financial barriers for young people in mining host communities pursuing tertiary education across Ghana.
Expanding Educational Opportunities
The programme provides essential financial assistance, covering costs such as tuition, accommodation, and other approved academic expenses for beneficiaries enrolled in various tertiary institutions. This year, the initiative welcomed 15 new students, while 16 students from the inaugural cohort continue to benefit, demonstrating a commitment to sustained support.
Each student can receive up to GH₵10,000 in scholarship funding, a significant amount that can make the difference between continuing and halting their academic pursuits. This financial aid is a cornerstone of Asanko Gold Ghana’s five-year Social and Economic Development Plan, which prioritizes education and long-term community advancement.
Overcoming Financial Hurdles
For many students, the scholarship represents a critical lifeline. Millicent Frimpong, a Doctor of Pharmacy student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, shared her experience. Financial difficulties had previously delayed her university entry by two years after senior high school.
