Thirty-one students from the Amansie West and Amansie South districts in Ghana are currently receiving vital financial support through the Asanko Scholarship Programme, now in its second year. The initiative provides financial aid for tuition, accommodation, and other academic expenses, enabling young people from mining host communities to pursue tertiary education across the country.
Expanding Educational Opportunities
This year’s cohort includes 15 newly selected students, joining 16 continuing beneficiaries from the program’s inaugural year. Each student is eligible for up to GH₵10,000 in scholarship support, a significant contribution aimed at alleviating financial barriers to higher education.

For many, the scholarship represents a crucial lifeline. Millicent Frimpong, a Doctor of Pharmacy student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, shared her struggles. Financial difficulties had delayed her university admission for two years after senior high school, forcing her and her family to work and take out loans to cover her first year’s expenses.
Her sister, Felicity Frimpong, highlighted the family’s reliance on loans to support Millicent’s initial year, underscoring the substantial financial burden involved in pursuing higher education without assistance.

Isaac Kwakye, Social Responsibility Manager at Asanko Gold Ghana, explained the programme’s objective. “Through this initiative, we hope to ease the financial burden that can sometimes stand in the way of talented and hardworking young people pursuing tertiary education,” he stated. The goal is to remove these obstacles and foster academic success.
The selection process is designed to be equitable and inclusive. It involves collaboration between District Education Directorates, traditional leaders, District Assemblies, and the company itself. This ensures that deserving students from all host communities have a fair chance to benefit from the programme.
