Accra, Ghana – In a robust defense of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) recent financial performance, Kofi Benteh Afful, Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso and a member of Parliament’s Business Committee, stated on Tuesday, May 5, that critics of the central bank’s reported losses are individuals actively wishing for Ghana’s economic downfall. His remarks come in direct response to concerns raised by former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam regarding the BoG’s audited 2025 financial statements.
Central Bank Mandate vs. Commercial Banking
Mr. Afful emphasized that the Bank of Ghana operates under a fundamentally different mandate than commercial banks. He argued that its primary objective is not profit generation but the crucial task of ensuring macroeconomic stability for the nation. This distinction, he asserted, means the BoG cannot be evaluated using the same metrics applied to private financial institutions.
