Barekese Youth Threaten Dump Site Blockade Over Alleged Broken Market Promise

Youth in Barekese, Ashanti region, are threatening to block the district’s refuse dump site if authorities deny their community a promised 24-hour market. The ultimatum, issued by the Barekese Youth Association, comes as the Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly prepares to cut the sod for the market project in Asuofua on Tuesday, a move the youth see as a betrayal of earlier assurances.

Context of the Dispute

Barekese residents were initially led to believe that the proposed 24-hour market, intended to boost local commerce and create jobs, would be established in their town. Traditional leaders had even allocated a suitable parcel of land for this purpose.

The youth association, led by Ernest Kwadwo Adusei, expressed disappointment and a sense of betrayal, citing assurances from the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mba Zakaria, during previous engagements. These assurances included site inspections and the provision of relevant documentation.

The planned sod-cutting ceremony in Asuofua, a town reportedly already possessing three markets, has intensified concerns among Barekese residents. They feel overlooked and believe the decision disregards their community’s needs and prior agreements.

Youth Association’s Grievances

Ernest Kwadwo Adusei stated at a press conference that the community is worried by the shift in plans, especially after receiving official assurances and preparing a site.

He highlighted the community’s disappointment over the perceived silence from the Ashanti Regional Minister, NDC Regional Executives, and the DCE following a petition submitted regarding the matter.

The youth argue that if the Assembly cannot fulfill its promise of a vital economic infrastructure like a 24-hour market for Barekese, then the community should not be expected to continue hosting the district’s refuse dump.

The Ultimatum and Its Implications

Adusei issued a stern warning: if the market project proceeds in Asuofua, Barekese will no longer permit its land to be used as the district’s refuse disposal site.
