Bono Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, has called upon the chiefs and residents of Amomaso and Benkasa communities in the Berekum West District to actively participate in the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey’. The appeal was made during the Minister’s ‘Accounting to the People’ forum held at Jinijini, the district capital, emphasizing the critical role of community intelligence in law enforcement efforts against these illicit activities.
Context of the Galamsey Challenge
Illegal mining has become a pervasive issue across Ghana, leading to significant environmental degradation, including water pollution and land destruction. It also poses risks to public health and safety, often involving hazardous practices and the involvement of foreign nationals. The government has repeatedly pledged to curb these activities, recognizing the severe economic and ecological damage they inflict.
The ‘Accounting to the People’ series is an initiative by the government aimed at fostering transparency, participatory governance, and responsive leadership. It provides a platform for government officials to engage directly with citizens, explain government policies, and address local concerns.
Ministerial Call to Action
During his address, Minister Akwaboa stressed that the effectiveness of security operations against illegal miners hinges on timely and accurate information from the local populace. He urged community members to report any suspected galamsey operations to the security agencies or the District Assembly immediately.
