Accra, Ghana – June 3, 2026 – A frantic rescue operation is underway at Adenta New Site in Accra after a one-storey residential building collapsed during intense rainfall on Wednesday, trapping several occupants. Four individuals have been rescued from the rubble so far, with emergency responders continuing their search for a woman believed to still be trapped.
Context of the Collapse
The collapse occurred following hours of heavy downpours that affected parts of Ghana’s capital. The affected structure, located near the Da Yesu Ase Supermarket, was a one-storey building containing ground- and first-floor apartments.
Rescue Efforts Underway
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported that two injured occupants were initially rescued by residents before emergency services arrived. Firefighters subsequently extracted two more injured victims from the debris, bringing the total rescued to four.
All four rescued individuals are currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. Initial unconfirmed reports suggested a fatality, but the Fire Service has not confirmed any deaths.
Occupants and Ongoing Search
The building is believed to have housed five occupants at the time of the collapse, including two women and three men. Among them were three children: one girl and two boys. The primary focus of the ongoing rescue effort is to locate the remaining occupant, a woman who is feared to be still trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
Community and Inter-Agency Cooperation
In a moment of relief amidst the tense operation, rescue personnel also successfully extricated a dog that had been trapped within the collapsed building. The GNFS lauded the swift actions of the residents, whose initial rescue efforts were crucial in saving two victims before the fire service’s arrival.
The Fire Service also acknowledged the valuable support provided by other emergency agencies assisting in the complex rescue operation. Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the cause of the structural failure once the rescue and recovery efforts are concluded.
Future Implications and What to Watch
This incident highlights the ongoing vulnerability of residential structures to extreme weather events, particularly in urban areas experiencing rapid development. The investigation into the cause of the collapse will be critical in determining whether structural integrity, construction quality, or environmental factors played the primary role. Residents and authorities will be watching closely for findings that could lead to stricter building regulations or improved urban planning to mitigate future risks. The focus will also remain on the successful recovery of the trapped woman and the long-term recovery of those injured.
