Calls for Caution Amidst Public Scrutiny of Engineer Amissah’s Death Probe

Former Minister of Health, Bernard Okoe Boye, urged restraint on Thursday, May 7, regarding public conclusions drawn from the investigative report into the death of engineer Charles Amissah. Speaking on Channel One TV, he emphasized the need for careful examination of the full report before making definitive judgments, citing potential reputational and professional consequences for those implicated.

Context of the Investigation

The controversy stems from a recently released committee report that linked Charles Amissah’s death to alleged lapses in emergency medical care. Several prominent health facilities, including the Police Hospital, the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, were reportedly implicated in the findings.

Concerns Over Public Naming and Abuse

The Ghana Medical Association has voiced significant concerns about the public identification of doctors and health professionals within the report. The association has reported that some individuals named in the findings are currently enduring online abuse, threats, and hostility.

Dr. Okoe Boye echoed these concerns, cautioning against premature public pronouncements. He stressed that findings from such sensitive investigations must be handled with care to ensure fairness to all parties involved. Making definitive public judgments based on partial information can have severe repercussions.

Due Process and Professional Standards

The former minister argued for a balanced approach, highlighting that in many legal and professional contexts, complete reports and supporting evidence are made available to provide full context before conclusions are reached. He suggested viewing the committee’s findings as a preliminary assessment rather than a final determination of guilt.
