Cutlass Clash Erupts in Akyem Oda, Police Restore Order Amidst Fears of Vigilantism

Calm has been restored in the New Station Area of Akyem Oda, Eastern South Region, following a violent confrontation involving young men armed with cutlasses on May 6, 2026. The clash left at least two individuals seriously injured and sent waves of fear through the community after disturbing videos circulated on social media.

The Eastern South Regional Police Command responded swiftly to reports of the open fight, dispatching officers to the scene. However, by the time they arrived, the suspects had already dispersed.

Two injured suspects were later located and are receiving medical attention at the Oda Jubilee Hospital and Akyem Oda Government Hospital, respectively. George Okyere, 30, sustained a severe laceration to his forehead and lost a finger on his right hand. Paul Pascalele is being treated for a deep cut on his right hand.

A third suspect, Evans Adayele, has been apprehended at his hideout and is currently cooperating with investigators. The police have stated that efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest the remaining individuals involved to ensure full accountability.

While the precise motive behind the violent altercation remains under official investigation, eyewitness accounts suggest a possible link to an ongoing dispute over land or transport-related activities within the busy commercial district. This incident has reignited concerns about the rising prevalence of youth vigilantism and the dangerous escalation of disputes through the use of offensive weapons in parts of the Eastern Region.

Community members and local leaders have acknowledged and praised the rapid police response. Simultaneously, they are urging for continued community engagement and proactive measures to prevent potential reprisal attacks and further outbreaks of violence.

DSP David Fianko-Okyere, Head of the Regional Public Affairs Unit, reaffirmed the commitment of the Eastern South Regional Police Command to maintaining law and order. He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and the use of weapons for settling disagreements, promising that all perpetrators will face legal consequences.

The police are appealing to the public for any information regarding the whereabouts of the remaining suspects. They encourage anyone with relevant details to contact the Eastern South Regional Command in Kibi or report to the nearest police station.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in managing community disputes and preventing the escalation of violence. The focus now shifts to the thorough investigation of the incident, the apprehension of all involved parties, and the implementation of community-based strategies to foster peaceful conflict resolution and deter future occurrences.
