Deceased Inspector's Girlfriend Convicted for GH¢2,000 Death Certificate Scam

A 38-year-old woman, Sarah Wilson, also known as Maame Esi, has been convicted by the Assin Fosu District Court for impersonating a senior police commander and defrauding the father of her deceased police inspector boyfriend of GH¢2,000. The incident, which occurred in May 2026, saw Wilson exploit her knowledge of the late inspector’s personal information to solicit funds under the false pretense of facilitating funeral arrangements and securing a death certificate. She was arraigned on Monday, June 1, 2026, pleading guilty to charges of impersonation, stealing, and obtaining an electronic payment medium by false pretences.

Context of the Deception

The case originated from a complaint lodged by the father of the late Inspector Evans Krampah, who previously served in the Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (RMTTD) at the Central North Region. Sarah Wilson, identified as the deceased inspector’s girlfriend, leveraged her proximity and understanding of the victim’s family’s grief.

On May 17 and May 20, 2026, Wilson contacted the bereaved father. Posing as the Central North Regional Police Commander, she informed him that GH¢2,000 was urgently required to process a burial certificate for his late son before the funeral. Trusting the supposed authority of the caller, the father complied and transferred the money electronically.

Escalating Fraud and Suspicion

Wilson’s fraudulent scheme did not end with the initial payment. Her greed led her to demand an additional GH¢2,000, claiming it was necessary for further official processes related to the death. This second, urgent request for funds raised the father’s suspicions.

Unconvinced by the escalating demands, the father decided to verify the situation. His doubts led him to lodge a formal complaint with the police station, initiating an investigation into the matter.

Investigation and Arrest

The police investigation, aided by a tip-off, quickly led to the arrest of Sarah Wilson on May 23, 2026. Investigators confirmed her identity as the girlfriend of the deceased police inspector. Crucially, the telephone numbers used in the fraudulent transactions were traced directly to her.

During interrogation, Wilson confessed to orchestrating the fraud. She revealed the use of a voice-modifying application, known as
