Things boiled over in dramatic fashion during a heated Spanish second-division derby—and the fallout has been massive.
Real Zaragoza goalkeeper Esteban Andrada is now facing a 13-match suspension after a moment of lost control turned an already intense match into chaos. The clash between Real Zaragoza and SD Huesca had all the tension you’d expect from a derby, but few could have predicted how far things would escalate.
Late in the game, Andrada was shown a second yellow card and sent off. But instead of heading straight down the tunnel, frustration got the better of him. He rushed toward Huesca captain Jorge Pulido and threw a punch—sparking an all-out brawl between players from both sides.
Spain’s football governing body, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, didn’t take long to respond. Andrada was handed a 12-match ban for violent conduct, plus an additional one-match suspension for the red card. In other words, his season is effectively over. Both he and Zaragoza were also fined.
Andrada wasn’t the only one to face consequences. Huesca goalkeeper Dani Jimenez received a four-match ban for his role in the incident, while Zaragoza’s Dani Tasende will miss two games.
To his credit, Andrada didn’t shy away from accountability. In a public apology, he admitted he “lost focus” and acknowledged the damage done. “It’s not a good image for the club, the fans, or myself as a professional,” he said. “I’m very sorry.”
Zaragoza echoed that sentiment, calling the scenes unacceptable and confirming that internal disciplinary action is on the way.
For a club already fighting to stay afloat in the league, this couldn’t come at a worse time. Losing your starting goalkeeper for the remainder of the season is a huge setback—and a reminder of how quickly emotions can spiral out of control in football’s most intense moments.
