Dozens of Nigerian Fishermen Feared Dead Following Chad Air Strikes in Lake Chad Region

Dozens of Nigerian fishermen are feared dead following air strikes conducted by Chad’s military targeting Boko Haram militants in the volatile Lake Chad region. Abubakar Gamandi Usman, chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Fisheries Association of Nigeria, reported that several union members are missing and estimated the death toll to be over 40. Authorities in both Chad and Nigeria have yet to officially comment on the incident, which follows retaliatory strikes by Chad’s military against Boko Haram strongholds.

Context: The Lake Chad Basin and Insurgency

The Lake Chad basin, a vast area of waterways and swampland shared by Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, has long been a critical hub for insurgent activities. Both Boko Haram and its splinter group, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), operate extensively within this region.

These militant groups have a significant influence over local communities, including fishermen. According to Usman, Boko Haram controls access to fishing grounds, manages transportation for fishermen, and levies taxes on their catch. This control complicates rescue efforts and exacerbates the vulnerability of the local population.
