The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) may be spreading more rapidly and widely than initially assessed, with cases suspected in neighboring Uganda and other DRC provinces. This escalating situation, occurring in a region plagued by conflict and displacement, has heightened fears among local populations and prompted international concern, leading the WHO to declare it an international health emergency.
Escalating Case Numbers and Rapid Spread
Officials in the DRC report over 514 suspected cases and 136 deaths from the virus, with one fatality confirmed in Uganda. Dr. Anne Ancia of the WHO expressed grave concern, stating that ongoing investigations reveal the virus has disseminated beyond its initial epicentre in Ituri province to other areas, including South Kivu and the major city of Goma.
This assessment is supported by modelling from the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis, which suggests a significant under-detection of cases, potentially exceeding 1,000 infections. The study indicates the outbreak’s
