ECG and GRIDCo Announce Planned Power Outages for Friday, May 22nd in Volta and Ashanti Regions

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have scheduled essential maintenance operations, including both planned and emergency works, across the Volta and Ashanti Regions for Friday, May 22, 2026. These critical infrastructure upgrades are expected to cause temporary disruptions to power supply in several communities, beginning at 9:00 am.

Infrastructure Upgrades Necessitate Service Disruptions

Engineers from GRIDCo and ECG will undertake vital infrastructure maintenance and upgrades on Friday, May 22, 2026. The scheduled works aim to ensure the long-term reliability and robustness of the national power network. While necessary for improved service delivery, these exercises will temporarily interrupt electricity supply to numerous areas.

Volta Region Maintenance Schedule

In the Volta Region, two distinct planned maintenance activities are slated. The first will take place from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. This will affect Kpataxoe, Tsita, Tongor, Atoklokpo, Dzakiti, Tsanakpe, Fantikope, Agordeke, Dzemeni, and their adjacent communities.

A second maintenance operation in the Volta Region is scheduled to run from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. This will impact power supply to Bowiri, Apenkwa, Bodada, Jasikan, and surrounding vicinities.

Ashanti Region Emergency Works and Affected Areas

GRIDCo will conduct emergency maintenance at the Asawinso Bulk Supply Point in the Ashanti Region. This work is scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2026, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The eight-hour outage will have a widespread impact on numerous communities.

Affected areas in the Ashanti Region include Chirano, Nambro, Subri, Anwiaso, Akyease, Kwamekrom, Bibiani, Mensin Gold mining company, Tanodumase, KD Sreso, Nyinahin, Kuffour Camp, Bayerebon, Nagole, Ntobroso, Adobewura, Akorabokrom, Agogoso, Anwiafutu, Kotokuom, and Anyinamso 1 and 2, along with their surrounding localities.

Impact on Mining Operations

The extended eight-hour outage in the Ashanti Region is particularly significant for the local mining sector. Operations at the Mensin Gold mining company, among others, are expected to be directly affected by the power disruption. This highlights the critical reliance of industrial activities on a stable electricity supply.

Company Apologies and Reassurance

Both ECG and GRIDCo have issued public notices extending their apologies to all customers who will be affected by these outages. The power distributors acknowledge the inconvenience these necessary technical interventions will cause to both domestic routines and commercial activities.

The companies reassured the public that these maintenance exercises are crucial for ensuring the long-term integrity and efficiency of the power network. Ultimately, these efforts are designed to lead to improved and more reliable electricity service for consumers across the affected regions.

Looking Ahead: Network Stability and Future Needs

The ongoing maintenance underscores the continuous need for investment and upkeep in Ghana’s electricity infrastructure. As demand for power grows with economic development and population increase, such proactive measures become indispensable. Residents and businesses in the Volta and Ashanti Regions will experience temporary disruptions, but the long-term goal is a more resilient power supply. Consumers and industry stakeholders will be watching to see how these upgrades contribute to reduced outages and improved service quality in the future.
