The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is set to redistribute older transformers, previously replaced under its infrastructure upgrade initiative, to enhance electricity supply in underserved areas across the nation. This strategic move aims to optimize resource utilization and extend reliable power to communities facing capacity challenges.
Maximizing Resources for Equitable Power Distribution
Francis Kofi Atsyatsya, General Manager of the Accra Sub-Transmission area, explained that replacing transformers with higher-capacity units does not render the older ones obsolete. Instead, these functional units will be redeployed to areas where demand is growing but does not yet necessitate the newly installed, larger transformers.
This approach is a key component of ECG’s broader nationwide strategy to strengthen power distribution networks. By ensuring all available equipment is used efficiently, the company seeks to address supply gaps and improve service delivery.
“The old transformers will be moved to other areas. For example, what we did at Akwetia was to install one of the old transformers there, and we will also move some to places like Tema and other locations we have earmarked,” Mr. Atsyatsya stated during a media briefing at the Batsona enclave in Accra.
Addressing Capacity Gaps in Growing Communities
The redeployment initiative directly tackles the challenge of providing adequate power to communities experiencing increased demand. These areas may not require the advanced capacity of the new transformers but still need reliable power to support economic activities and daily life.

The company has already installed 12 new transformers as part of its ongoing upgrade program at multiple substations. Concurrently, ECG is identifying suitable destinations for the older, yet functional, units.
