Member of Parliament for Effia, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, has urged political actors to cease exploiting the recently passed Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, for partisan advantage. The call came on Saturday, May 30, following the legislation’s parliamentary approval after months of intense national and international debate.
Context of the Bill’s Passage
The controversial bill, which criminalises LGBTQ+ activities, advocacy, and the promotion of what it defines as non-conventional sexual relations and family values, has been a focal point of discussion in Ghana. Its journey through Parliament was marked by significant public discourse and external scrutiny from human rights organizations and international bodies.
Mr. Boamah-Nyarko, who also serves on Parliament’s Finance Committee, expressed his concerns during an appearance on the program ‘Newsfile’. He highlighted a perceived tendency for political figures to leverage the bill’s popularity among a segment of the population to gain political capital.
