Enterprise Group PLC has officially commissioned a new Reproductive, Child Health and Family Planning Unit at the Sunyani Municipal Hospital, investing approximately GH₵2.4 million to significantly enhance maternal and child healthcare services in the Bono Region. The state-of-the-art facility aims to transform care for pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children in Sunyani and surrounding areas.
Modern Facility Replaces Dilapidated Structure
The newly constructed unit features a cold room, a general ward, a health promotion office, and an administrative block, all equipped with modern medical equipment. This upgrade replaces a former structure described as an “old, dilapidated shed with termite-infested doors, almost near collapse.” The transformation was made possible by Enterprise Group PLC’s substantial investment.
Multi-Purpose Health Hub
Dr Adinkrah-Kyeremeh Richard, Sunyani Municipal Director of Health Services, detailed the unit’s comprehensive functions. It will provide essential services including child growth monitoring, nutrition support, immunisation programs, health promotion activities, and family planning services for women.
The intervention comes as Sunyani Municipal Hospital approaches its 100th anniversary. However, Dr. Adinkrah-Kyeremeh highlighted that many of the hospital’s existing facilities remain in poor condition, failing to reflect its status. He appealed to other corporate institutions for further support, particularly for the Antenatal Clinic, which requires renovation and new equipment.
Enterprise Group’s Commitment to CSR
Mike Tyson, Chief Financial Officer of Enterprise Group PLC, affirmed the project as a key component of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The GH₵2.4 million investment covered both infrastructure and furnishings.
Mr. Tyson urged hospital authorities to prioritize the facility’s maintenance to ensure its long-term impact. “We look forward to the Sunyani Municipal Hospital authorities maintaining the facility so that it can deliver healthcare to mothers and their children,” he stated, expressing hope that the unit will contribute to reducing child mortality in the region.
Call for Professionalism in Healthcare Delivery
Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, Paramount Chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area, while commending the corporate donation, voiced concerns regarding the conduct of some healthcare professionals. He observed instances of nurses prioritizing personal phone use over patient care and noted disheartening interactions with patients perceived to be of lower social status.
The Chief expressed hope that the new facility will inspire renewed commitment and professionalism among the nursing staff, leading to improved service delivery for all patients.
Future Outlook and Sector Impact
The new Reproductive, Child Health and Family Planning Unit is poised to significantly improve maternal health outcomes and reduce child mortality rates within the Sunyani municipality. Enterprise Group’s initiative serves as a notable example of private sector engagement in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure. Hospital authorities continue to seek additional support from other corporate bodies to address ongoing infrastructure needs.
