Former Attorney General Dame Hints at Expanded Political Future, Focuses on NPP’s 2028 Comeback

Former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame has indicated a potential for a broader political involvement beyond his current capacity, while definitively stating he has no aspirations to become a Member of Parliament. Speaking on the program PM Express on Wednesday, Dame suggested his political trajectory is ongoing, with possibilities extending significantly, stating “the sky is the limit.”

When questioned about a full transition into politics, Dame attributed direction to divine will, remarking, “I think that ultimately is God who directs and orders the affairs of men.” He further elaborated, “And of course, I continue to be in politics, and the sky is the limit. So maybe we just say that’s the beginning, and we leave it at that.”

However, when pressed by host Evans Mensah regarding parliamentary ambitions, Dame provided a clear rejection. “Definitely not, you know I am very clear in my mind I am not going to run as an MP,” he stated unequivocally.

The discussion then shifted to presidential aspirations. Dame stopped short of a direct declaration but reiterated the expansive potential of his political future. “Well, the sky is the limit, as I said. I mean, ultimately, we see what the future holds. Of course, the good Lord always orders the steps,” he commented.

Despite speculation about his personal political ambitions, Dame emphasized his immediate commitment is to support the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in its bid to regain power in the upcoming 2028 general elections. He specifically mentioned his dedication to the campaign of former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

“We committed to working hard to ensure Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is indeed elected the President of the Republic and assumes the reins of office on January 7, 2029,” Dame declared, outlining the party’s immediate electoral objective.

Dame also asserted that recent political events have served to validate the NPP’s position following their defeat in the 2024 general elections. He suggested that the public is beginning to recognize perceived inconsistencies from the ruling party.

“And I’ve no doubt at all that, as we have seen, the unfolding of the hypocrisy, contradictions, and manifest propaganda roll out before our eyes, the good people of Ghana who see that indeed they made a wrong choice on December 7, 2024,” he added, expressing confidence in the electorate’s eventual reconsideration.

This statement from the former Attorney General signals a strategic positioning within the NPP as the party prepares for the next electoral cycle. His explicit exclusion of a parliamentary role, coupled with open-ended remarks about future leadership, suggests a potential focus on national campaign roles or advisory positions within the party structure.

The NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections marked a significant setback, ending an eight-year tenure in government. The party is now tasked with rebuilding its platform and rallying support for its new flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia. Dame’s public endorsement and hinted future involvement indicate a desire to leverage his experience and influence in this rebuilding phase.

Political analysts suggest that figures like Dame, who hold significant experience from previous government roles, are crucial for opposition parties aiming to present a strong alternative. His background as Attorney General provides him with a profile that could resonate with voters seeking strong leadership and legal acumen.

The coming months will likely see increased activity from Dame and other senior NPP figures as they strategize for the 2028 elections. The party will need to effectively articulate its vision and address the concerns that led to its electoral loss, while simultaneously countering the narrative of the incumbent government.

Dame’s comments underscore the dynamic nature of Ghanaian politics, where former high-ranking officials often remain influential even after leaving office. His assertion that “the sky is the limit” leaves open the possibility of various significant roles as the NPP seeks to reclaim the presidency.

What remains to be seen is how Dame’s stated ambitions will translate into concrete actions and whether his involvement will be instrumental in shaping the NPP’s campaign strategy and public perception leading up to 2028. The party’s ability to unite behind its chosen leadership and effectively communicate its message will be critical in its quest to return to power.
