Former Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh marked his 58th birthday by donating essential medical equipment to the Children’s Ward at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Ghana, on his recent birthday. The initiative aims to address critical equipment shortages and enhance the care provided to critically ill children at the facility.
Addressing a Critical Need
Hospital authorities at KATH have consistently highlighted a high demand for vital medical supplies. Shortages have been reported in crucial items such as pulse oximeters, blood pressure monitors, oxygen concentrators, suction machines, and patient stretchers. These deficiencies directly impact the hospital’s ability to provide timely and effective care, particularly for its youngest and most vulnerable patients.
The donation from Dr. Opoku Prempeh is expected to significantly bolster the capacity of healthcare workers. By providing these much-needed tools, the gesture aims to improve the monitoring and treatment of children in critical condition, potentially leading to better health outcomes.
A Shift in Birthday Tradition
Dr. Opoku Prempeh, who also served as the NPP’s Vice Presidential Candidate for the 2024 election, stated that this donation represents a deliberate shift from personal celebration to community service. He explained his decision to dedicate his birthday to giving back to others, rather than focusing on personal festivities.
