Former Sports Minister Denies Role in African Games Audit Irregularities

Accra, Ghana – Former Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has publicly denied any personal responsibility for financial and procurement irregularities highlighted in a recent audit report concerning the 13th African Games hosted by Ghana. The report, which details alleged breaches in contract management and financial accountability, has led to calls for sanctions and recovery of funds.

Context of the Audit

The Comprehensive Audit Report on the 13th African Games, Accra 2023, was released following Ghana’s successful, yet scrutinized, hosting of the continental sporting event. The audit aimed to assess the financial management, procurement processes, and overall administration of the Games.

Its findings have brought to light several alleged instances of financial impropriety and procedural missteps during the planning and execution phases of the event. The report specifically names former officials, including Ussif, former Chief Director William Kartey, and former LOC Chairman Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, recommending sanctions and the recovery of significant sums.

Ussif’s Rejection of Allegations

In a statement, Mustapha Ussif expressed that his attention had been drawn to the audit report and its findings attributing certain irregularities to him. He unequivocally denied being responsible for any such alleged wrongdoing.
